Dear love birds, have you ever considered a honeymoon in Morocco? While most couples dream of all-inclusive resorts in the Maldives or Seychelles, a honeymoon in Morocco can be surprisingly incredible. After living in Morocco for 10 years, I’ve gathered the best honeymoon spots and ideas to help you plan an unforgettable romantic escape.
Known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and vibrant cultural fusion, Morocco offers a unique and unforgettable experience. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Africa, this enchanting country provides a romantic and memorable experience for couples to explore together during their honeymoon.
Honeymoon in Morocco – My Guide
My ultimate Morocco honeymoon guide has everything you need to make it unforgettable. A honeymoon in Morocco should be more than just endless driving. My vision is all about:
- Relaxing in serene settings
- Discovering new cultures
- Immersing yourself in local traditions
- Celebrating love in a magical way
Stay in a big riad or hotel in Marrakech
Marrakech is full of amazing riads (type of hotels) to stay in the Medina (old town), but I suggest choosing a bigger riad or hotel with an outside space, garden and swimming pool. During your honeymoon, you want more privacy than the small riad hotels can offer. Check out authentic hotels in Medina like Les Jardins le La Medina, Riad El Fenn – you can spend days in Marrakech getting lost in Medina and eating delicious food.
Or, for something more fancy, book the legendary La Mamounia (I love its location, close to Medina) or Four Seasons (also in the city). Also, check out my little secret — Dar Rhizlane, which is in the new part of Marrakech, but the hotel is authentic and peaceful.
If you want to relax, choose more resorts outside Medina—you might spend more time going to the Medina, but you will feel like you’re in paradise in hotels like Mandarin Oriental, Jnane Tamsna, Selman Marrakech, Amanjena, and others.
And my little secret – if you like live music and more boutique style, check out The Source or Fellah hotels with beautiful surroundings, organised live music events.
Sahara desert (road trip) romance
First of all, the Sahara Desert is pretty far, around 9 hours drive from Marrakech or Casablanca. You can also choose to fly (if the flight dates are convenient), or make it as an amazing honeymoon road trip.
If you decide to drive or hire a private driver or tour, you can check out my offered private four-day Sahara tour. Don’t do it in three days, as it is too rushed and you will not spend much time in the Sahara desert. The most convenient location is the Sahara desert in Merzouga, but if you want something remote, choose the desert next to M’Hamid Grizlane town. Read more about Sahara desert of Morocco in my article Merzouga vs Zagora for the Sahara desert trip in Morocco?
In the Sahara desert, tip your driver or desert camp guys to take amazing pictures of you. Do the 4×4 desert tour, enjoy the silence, or even ask desert camp guys to organise a private dinner in the dunes. You can also drive yourself. Just follow my proposed itinerary above or contact me, and I will create you a private itinerary.
Small tip: For your Morocco honeymoon, choose a maximum of two or three different locations and stay there longer. Do some day trips and activities and meet locals. For example, if you do Marrakech and the desert trips, it’s already enough.

Agafay desert retreat
Don’t want to drive to the Sahara desert? Go for the stone Agafay desert, just 1h drive from Marrakech. There are many camps i the Agafay desert, so choose the one by your budget and style. Many of the camps have swimming pools; if you don’t have a rented car, you must ask for camp private transfers. There is not much to do there, except camel rides and buggies/quads, so you will have lots of private romantic time together. Ah, and contact me if you like me to book you my favourite camp in Agafay (it’s not even on Booking.com).
Small tip: A photoshoot in the Agafay desert is a great idea. Book a local photographer from Marrakech or ask the camp to arrange it.
High Atlas Mountains
Are you a hiking and nature lover? Then spend few days in Imlil village or around. You can read more about Imlil in my post The essential guide to Imlil village, Morocco. Located only 1,5h away from Marrakech, Imlil is the main base for attempting to summit Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa (4160 m). However, you don’t need to climb Toubkal to visit Imlil. Surrounded by the Toubkal National Park and located at 1800 meters altitude, Imlil is dotted with small Berber villages. There, you can explore these authentic villages, breathe the fresh mountain air, and relax.
What hotels to stay in Imlil
For high-end stays: Kasbah du Toubkal (best location right in the village), Kasbah Tamadot (not in the village, so would need to drive bit)
Other nice hotels in Imlil: Douar Samra, Hiba Lodge and others.
Small tip: in winters Imlil can be cold and with snowy valleys, but still so beautiful. Also, many hotels are spreaded around the village, so better to have rented car.
Best beach gateway – Taghazout
If I were planning my honeymoon in Morocco, my top choice would be a beachside place —or even better, a place right on the beach. Taghazout village is an excellent option, offering stunning beachfront views and a relaxed atmosphere. If you find it too crowded, you can easily escape to the nearby, quieter beaches.
Keep in mind that Taghazout has gained significant popularity recently, so it’s wise to book your accommodation well in advance. For inspiration on activities and experiences in this charming village, check out my detailed guide: A Guide to Taghazout, Morocco (Not Just for Surfers).
Travel Tip: Accommodation options in Taghazout are limited, so consider exploring Airbnb apartments, many of which are located right on the main beach. When booking, ensure the property is within Taghazout village itself, as listings from nearby villages can sometimes be misleading.
Best activities for the honeymoon in Marrakech
- Hammam immerse yourself into a hammam experience in Morocco. If you are not a fan of hammams, go for a spa day with a massage. Best for luxury – Royal Mansour Spa, or more simply – Les Bains du Marrakech in Medina. I would suggest doing hammam more in the evening, after all day activities and head to some nice rooftop after.
- Sidecars tour – an amazing experience with vintage sidecars in Marrakech, always on my top list.
- Hot air balloon in Marrrakech
- Cooking class with local family
- Enjoy lunch/pool day outside Marrakech places like Kasbah Bab Ourika, Manzil Turture and others
Public Displays of Affection in Morocco
I understand—it’s your honeymoon, and that’s exciting! But remember that Morocco is still a Muslim country, and respecting local customs is essential. Here are additional customs and cultural tips for couples to keep in mind while traveling in Morocco:
Here’s my advice:
- Avoid public displays of affection (PDA):
Kissing in public is considered inappropriate, except for greeting kisses (a light kiss on both cheeks is a common way to greet someone in Morocco). - Holding hands is generally acceptable, but it’s best to keep it modest, especially in rural areas. You may also notice men holding hands—this is entirely normal in Morocco and is a sign of friendship or familial closeness.
- Even in large hotels, it’s respectful to reserve PDA for your private space, aligning with local cultural and religious norms.
