It was our last full day in Langkawi, our last full day in Malaysia. And our last stop in the country was Tanjung Rhu Resort, and here, for the past two days, we’ve done nothing but eat, relax, and laze around. It was just what we needed after traveling our way through the colorful streets of Penang and Langkawi’s Pantai Cenang.
SUNSET AT TANJUNG RHU BEACH |
Tomorrow, we fly to Singapore, the third leg of our Backpacking With A Kid trip. But for now, we savor the setting sun while we laze on a sandy beach almost all to ourselves. It was quite perfect—well, okay, not really. If we have a cold, cold beer in hand, then that would really make it perfect.

HOW TO GET TO TANJUNG RHU
TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI BEACH SIDE |
From Pantai Cenang, where we stayed for the past six days—first at Mercure Langkawi, then at Rebak Island Resort—we took a Grab car to Tanjung Rhu. We have previously been to this area before, trying out Parasailing at Langkawi via Naam Sports. So, we do have an inkling on what to expect on this side of the island—and that is endless stretches of white sandy beaches without the tourist crowd.
TWILIGHT AT THE RESORT |
Tanjung Rhu Resort is located at the mukim or township of Ayer Hangat on the northern portion of Langkawi. It is quite a ways away from Pantai Cenang, and it took us about half an hour to reach it, with our bill for a Grab car at around MYR 50.00. Well, it’s actually not that bad—there was absolutely no traffic for the forty-minute drive and the route was quite scenic, with lush towering trees lining the road like a tunnel.

ABOUT TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI
TANJUNG RHU RESORT’S MAIN ENTRANCE |
Rated as a five-star resort, Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi offers nothing but luxury to guests—they don’t have any ordinary hotel rooms, the only ones they have are suites. Spectacularly massive suites. Designed around a circular central courtyard filled with trees and tranquil ponds, they have seven types of suites—most, if not all, have two balconies—one overlooking the central atrium, and another overlooking the sea or the forest beyond.
RUSTIC LOBBY AREA |
Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi Pet Policy: Unfortunately for pet lovers, Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi is not pet-friendly. It does not allow pets on its property.

WHERE WE STAYED
A TYPICAL BEDROOM AT TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI |
For three days, we stayed at Tanjung Rhu Resort’s Bayu Senja Seaview Suite, one of their most luxurious suites. To say it was huge, is an understatement, and the view was nothing short of spectacular.

Receiving Room
RECEIVING ROOM ~ PHOTO FROM TANJUNG RHU RESORT WEBSITE |
Located on the second floor, it has a receiving room that is almost as big as a regular Deluxe Room for most mid-range resorts. It has a sofa, a flatscreen TV, a snack cabinet where the mini-fridge and coffee and tea-making facilities are—they have coffee pods, but their local instant coffee are one of the best I’ve had—and its very own balcony that looks over the garden atrium.
Â
Walk-In Closet
WALK-IN CLOSET ~ PHOTO FROM TANJUNG RHU RESORT WEBSITE |
To get to the main bedroom, you have to pass through a walk-in closet, which has a massive amount of storage space, which you cannot possibly max out. A door on the left leads to the toilet and bath, and the one out front leads to the main bedroom.
Â
Toilet & Bath
SPACIOUS TOILET AND BATH |
The toilet is, naturally, incredibly spacious.
A very long his and hers lavatory line the left side of the wall and on the right, a bathtub with a retractable window that opens to the bedroom—good for a romantic stay or if you just want to relax on the tub with a view of the Andaman Sea.
THE TOILET AND BATH AS SEEN FROM THE BEDROOM |
Straight on is the water closet and shower, with each having its own closable stalls.
Â
Main Bedroom
MASSIVE MAIN BEDROOM |
And the main feature of the suite, is of course the main bedroom.
SITTING AREA INSIDE THE BEDROOM |
Not to be outdone, it has a sitting room with full sofa, and behind it, a workstation that can sit two workaholic bloggers. On the wall, narrow vertical windows allow a framed view of the beach—whetting our curiosity for a full view of the sea.
SLEEPING AREA |
A low cabinet with a flatscreen TV that can be swiveled stands as divider for the sleeping area, where an invitingly soft queen-bed sits. On its left is the retractable window for the bath tub, and on the right a sliding glass door that leads to a balcony that overlooks the beach, the sea, and two islets. A couple of bottles of beer on the mini-fridge and it cannot be more perfect.

THINGS TO DO IN TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI
A VIEW OF THE ISLETS IN FRONT OF THE RESORT |
Since Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi is located on a remote part of Langkawi, getting out of the resort to do stuff isn’t really an option—except for a few activities. But fear not, since there are not a few things you can do while at the resort itself.

Swimming Pools
THE SANDS SWIMMING POOL, FOR ADULTS ONLY |
One of the biggest draws of Tanjung Rhu Resort are its two massive pools, the Sands Pool at the south and the Sunset Pool on the north end of the property. Both of these are really, really long pools. The Sands Pool measures close to fifty meters, similar in length to an Olympic-sized pool, and the Sunset Pool exceeds it at sixty meters long. I actually tried doing laps on the latter, and I just barely made it from end to end—it is extremely long!
THE POOL IS RIGHT BESIDE THE BEACH |
Both pools sit right beside the beach and are quite unusual in that they don’t have tiled walls and floors, utilizing a pebble-washout finish instead.
SUNSET AT THE SUNSET POOL |
While The Sands Pool is an adult-only pool—probably since it is quite deep—the Sunset Pool has a roofed kiddie area, so that’s where we usually frequent since we have Kid A with us.
Â
Gym & Spa
THE SPA AND GYM AREA SITS AT THE BACK OF THE SUNSET POOL AREA |
Open from 7:00AM to 11:00PM, Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi has a gym with multi-functional fitness and weightlifting equipment. Work out with a view of the beach as your backdrop.
Tanjung Rhu’s Spa opens from 12NN to 8PM, and offers traditional and contemporary treatments with their Rhu Ritual Massage, Rhu Relaxing Massage, and yoga classes.
Â
Reading Room
FRAMED VIEW OF THE BEACH AT THE READING ROOM |
For bookworms, Tanjung Rhu Resort has a dedicated library where you can borrow and read books while enjoying the view of the beach. Board games are also available, if your group is into those. And It also has a small café where you can order cakes, pastries, gelatos, and even wine.
Â
Bar Games
BAR GAMES AT THE SAFFRON BAR AND RESTAURANT |
Billiard tables, table football or foosball, and dart boards are available for guests at the Saffron Restaurant. However, it does open late, from 5:00PM to 12:00AM.
Â
Tennis
TANJUNG RHU RESORT HAS TWO TENNIS COURTS ~ PHOTO FROM RESERVING.COM |
If smashing a ball with a racket is your thing, the resort has a couple of tennis courts across the road. It’s open from 7:00AM to 11:00PM and you can even book lessons from professional instructors.
Â

Beach
SUNSET AT TANJUNG RHU BEACH |
And then, there is of course, the beach. Tanjung Rhu Resort Langkawi fronts a 1.5 kilometers-long white sand beach fringed with Casuarina trees. With a backdrop of the Chabang and Kelam Baya Islands, you can swim, snorkel, ride jetskis, kayak, walk from one end of the coast to the other, and even rent an ATV (45-minute guided tour, 10am to 6pm).
 |
TANJUNG RHU BEACH |
When the tide is low, one of the unique things you can do at Tanjung Rhu is walk along a sandbar that goes all the way to Pulau Chabang.

Bird Watching
COMMON MYNA AT TANJUNG RHU BEACH |
The Tanjung Rhu area is home to more than twenty species of birds—a haven for birding enthusiasts. During our stay, we spotted common mynas and Brahminy kite eagles. I read that there are hornbills, kingfishers, dollar birds, shrikes, among others, which our untrained eye weren’t able to spot. You can actually hire a birding guide if you fancy doing bird-watching activities.
Â
Kilim Geoforest Park Cruise
KILIM GEOFOREST PARK CRUISE |
The resort is located near the Tanjung Rhu Mangrove Jetty, the starting point for the UNESCO Global Geopark-inscribed Kilim Geoforest Park—one of the must-visit places not only in Langkawi, but the whole of Malaysia. A tour can be booked at the lobby or you can do it DIY via online booking sites like Klook, preferably after you check out so as to maximize your time inside the resort.

WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT IN TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI
DINING OPTIONS AT TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI |
One of the best things to do in Tanjung Rhu Resort is to eat. And you have, not one, but six places to go to without leaving the resort to satiate your appetite.
Â
Sands Restaurant
SANDS RESTAURANT AT TANJUNG RHU RESORT LANGKAWI |
The resort’s main restaurant, Sands is where guests have their complimentary buffet breakfast. Situated on a high-ceilinged open-air structure, they offer a combination of Western and Malaysian dishes, all halal-certified.
 |
OUR BREAKFAST SPREAD FROM THE COMPLIMENTARY BUFFET |
We, of course, have tried their breakfast buffet and it was one of the best we’ve had in Langkawi. We love their freshly made roti canai, bihun goreng, nasi lemak, dimsums, and their really spicy i-forgot-the-name soup. We paired it with their Western brethren—sausages, muffins, omelets, and pancakes.
ICED COFFEE AND CHAMPAGNE FOR BREAKFAST AT TANJUNG RHU RESORT |
Another great thing about their breakfast is that you can request for kopi ais (Malaysian iced coffee), teh tarik (pulled tea), and even champagne. Champagne for breakfast? Why not.
GRILLED BURGER TANJUNG ~ MYR 42.00 |
We also got to try dinner at Sands, ordering nasi goreng udang, grilled burger Tanjung, and for Kid A, Barney & Friends or breaded chicken with French fries and mayo.
NASI GORENG UDANG ~ MYR 45.00 |
We were blown away with nasi goreng udang’s massive freshwater prawn paired with the mildly spicy fried rice. Their burger was also good, nothing to write home about, but good nonetheless. While the toddler meal got a thumbs up from Kid A.
Â
Sunset Pool Bar
THE SUNSET POOL BAR |
We spent one of our meals at Tanjung Rhu Resort at their Sunset Pool Bar. Our lunch included hotdog sandwich, nachos, clubhouse, and for Kid A, chicken fingers. They also have beer, so it’s Asahi for me, Carlsberg Draught for BG, and fruit shake for Kid A.
 |
HOTDOG AND CLUBHOUSE SANDWICH |
While it won’t win any Michelin Stars, it was quite the fun meal. The staff were also so kind, they even gave us a bowl of rambutan!
FREE RAMBUTAN FROM THE FRIENDLY STAFF |
Â
Saffron Restaurant
OUR PIZZA BEING COOKED ON SAFFRON RESTAURANT’S BRICK OVEN |
The best meal we’ve had at Tanjung Rhu Resort was at their Saffron Restaurant. Everything from the menu of the restaurant are cooked on wood-fired oven. We requested for a plate of chicken and beef satay which comes with rice cakes and peanut sauce; spicy corned beef with diced potatoes and garlic bread, wood fire BBQ chicken wings with latin sauce, and beef bacon & chicken pizza.
 |
CHICKEN AND BEEF SATAY ~ MYR 35.00 |
Everything was really, really delicious. I particularly love mildly spicy corned beef which was marinated with spices. The pizza, which was made from sour dough and topped with beef bacon, chicken ham, black olives, tomato cherry, capsicums, and mozzarella cheese, was also particularly good.

BEEF BACON & CHICKEN PIZZA ~ MYR 45.00 | SPICY CORNED BEEF ~ MYR 38.00 |
Â
The Reading Room, Chef’s Table, Sands Pool Bar
TANJUNG RHU RESORT’S CHEF’S TABLE |
There are a few more eating places inside Tanjung Rhu Resort which we weren’t able to try. The Reading Room offers mainly snacks and gelatos, the premier Chef’s Table which serves classic Italian dishes, and the Sands Pool Bar which probably serves the same menu as those we’ve tried at the Sunset Pool Bar.
Â
Beach Dining
TANJUNG RHU RESORT’S BEACH AREA |
Another dining option at Tanjung Rhu is the beach. The resort actually offers Private Beach BBQ Dinner, Romantic Beach Dinner, and Sunset BBQ Buffet Dinner for guests thru special reservation.
